JAT Holdings Concludes Pilot Female Painters Project

As the market leader in Sri Lanka's wood coatings industry, JAT Holdings continuously pioneers initiatives to elevate industry standards and the livelihoods of painters. Recognizing the male-dominated nature of the carpentry and painting industry in Sri Lanka, JAT launched a pilot female painter program under its flagship JAT Pintharoo Abhiman program. The 4-day training aimed to groom interested females pursuing or enhancing their skills in wood coating.

The first batch of female painters included a combination of experienced painters and those aspiring to enter the field or with an interest in learning wood coating techniques. Covering a comprehensive curriculum from basics to advanced coating techniques, the program equips participants to obtain a broad understanding and experience in achieving diverse wood finishes using the right products and machinery. Moreover, this program serves as a platform for experienced and non-experienced painters to progress toward obtaining an internationally recognized NVQ-level qualification from the National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA) after fulfilling the entry criteria. It also provides the opportunity to enhance their entrepreneurial skills to run a successful business as a qualified painter.

Whilst conceptualizing, designing, and executing the JAT Pintharoo Abhiman program, JAT focused on aligning its program to support the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, focused on eradicate extreme poverty for all people everywhere through livelihood development (SDG 1), inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities (SDG 4), Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all (SDG 8). With the initiation of the female painter project, JAT extended its focus to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls (SDG 5).

While the series of JAT Pintharoo Abhiman workshops attracted experienced females nationwide pursuing a career in wood coating, the pilot program exemplifies JAT Holdings' commitment to breaking barriers in gender stereotypes, providing equal opportunities for learning and employability for talented wood craftsmen and painters. Our objective is to enhance industry standards, recognition, and livelihoods, culminating in the growth and sustainability of the industry.
